Summer doesn’t seem to want to end. No complaints here!
Please take a look at some of the interesting lectures and events that are happening this month and beyond:
JCMGF MEETING / “SLUG UNIVERSITY” Thursday, October 9; 3-5pm
“Slug University” is the Jefferson County Master Gardeners Foundation October educational lecture series subject.
Cori Carlton, the Master Gardener Coordinator for Thurston County since 2009, is a slug aficionado, with a Bachelor of Science degree from Central Michigan University. Cori has spent the last 13 years studying this fascinating creature and teaching others about them through her “Slug University” curriculum.
The Jefferson County Master Gardener Foundation lectures take place the second Thursday of each month, from 3-4pm. Foundation business meetings follow each lecture.
Can anyone else bring snacks this month? We have one volunteer so far; ideally, two or three is best. Please email if you can help out. Bring fun raffle items too!

Update: Our JCMGF meetings resumed in September. Thirty people attended this event. The feedback was great. Our presenter was Rita Dinger, a Clallam County MG veteran. She discussed care, harvesting and varieties of garlic.

WESTERN WASHINGTON FRUIT RESEARCH FOUNDATION “SAMPLE THE APPLE AND PEAR HARVEST” Saturday, October 11, 2014; 11:00-2:00
The Western Washington Fruit Research Foundation (WWFRF) presents “Sample the Apple and Pear Harvest”
Hosted in cooperation with WSU-NWREC, the event includes sampling of sweet cider and a demonstration of the open center or vase type pruning technique which is well adapted to stone fruits. Participants will be able to sample and take home many of the late apple and pear
varieties in the WWFRF Fruit Garden, many of which are antique varieties. For more information, go to www.nwfruit.org.
The Western Washington Fruit Research Foundation (WWFRF) was created in 1991 to help fund the Tree Fruit Varietal Research conducted at the Washington Northwest University Research and Extension Center (WSU-NWREC). WWFRF volunteers are dedicated to supporting research and educating the public on the special fruit growing conditions found in
the Pacific Northwest region.

TWO MORE PLANT CLINICS AT CHIMACUM FARMERS MARKET 2nd and 4th Sundays of October; 10-2
The WSU plant clinic extension office location is over, but we have two more dates at the Chimacum Farmers Market (Oct. 12 & 26). Mike M is looking for a few more people to help out. Here’s your chance to get in eight more plant clinic hours before the end of the year. Let Mike and/or me know if you want to participate.

USING COVER CROP MIXTURES WEBINAR Tuesday, October 14; 11am
Join eOrganic for the first webinar of the fall 2014 season! In Using Cover Crop Mixtures to Achieve Multiple Goals on the Farm, a team of researchers at Penn State University will discuss the use of cover crop “cocktails” or mixtures to achieve weed suppression, nitrogen scavenging, nitrogen provisioning, and attracting beneficial insects and pollinators. Results from a study of winter cover crops in a grain and forage research project at the Penn State Rock Springs Research Farm and from several Pennsylvania farms will be shown. They will also review issues of cover crop timing, termination, and general management to aid in farmer insight and adoption of cover crop mixes.
The webinar takes place on Tuesday, October 14 at 2PM Eastern Time (1PM Central, 12PM Mountain, 11AM Pacific Time). The presentation will last an hour, followed by 30 minutes for questions. Attendees will be able to type in questions for the speakers. The webinar is free and open to the public, and advance registration is required.

This exciting workshop series will bring people together to take on toxic chemicals that challenge their everyday life. Each week will focus on a different aspect of your life: cleaning products, personal care products, household items, and food. It’s free and open to the public. “APHIDS TO ZUCCHINI” BROWN BAG LUNCH LECTURES Third Monday of each month, March 17 through November 17; 12-1pm (next one is October 20)
Our October WSU Master Gardener educational lecture series subject is “Putting Your Garden to Bed”. Master Gardener, Sarah Fairbank, will give you some great tips on cutting back and cleaning up. Many pests and diseases over-winter in plant debris, so the extra effort you put into cleaning up your garden this fall will pay big dividends next year.
We welcome MGs and the general public, so bring friends and family. Questions and sharing of advice are encouraged throughout the lecture. Don’t forget to bring your lunch.

2015 YARD AND GARDEN SERIES SPEAKERS AND TOPICS ARE SET! Six Saturdays, starting January 10
Nancesca S, Roger M, and Barbara S, have confirmed our speakers for the 2015 Yard and Garden Series. They are still waiting for the contracts to come back, so next month we’ll let you know who’s on the list.
In the meantime, please email me if you are able to help out at the lecture series. We will need setup/cleanup people, AV specialists, a food coordinator, and plant clinicians. Let me know your preference and we’ll plug you in the schedule.

Also, from Roger M regarding Y&G: “Fellow MGs, I could use some help. Our first speaker for the 2015 Y & G Series is Aaron Stark on 10 January. Aaron will be speaking on “Cooking with Herbs”. I would like to have a lot of 4” pots of herbs to give out at the presentation. I realize this is a little late, but many herbs are divisible and you may have them in your yard. Some may have also self seeded and be available as small plant starts, or if you have a warm place, you might start some from seed (soon!).
Here are some ideas:
DIVISIBLE: Chives, Horseradish, French Tarragon, Fennel, Hyssop, Levage, Lemon Balm, Mint, Marjoram, Winter Savory, Thyme and Ginger.
SEED: Coriander, Parsley.
SOFTWOOD CUTTINGS: Lemon Verbena.
SEMI RIPE CUTTINGS: Rosemary, Sage

Our final Y & G Program will be on Seed Saving for the Home Gardener. Please be thinking ahead on what seeds you would like to exchange in a Seed Swap that we will be conducting on that day.”
2015 SECRET GARDEN TOUR GARDENS ARE BEING SELECTED Saturday, June 20
Six gardens are tentatively set for the Secret Garden Tour. Please set aside this date to assist in our biggest fundraiser of the year. The tour and the plant sale will take place on the same date.

NEW YEAR FOR MG/4H AFTER SCHOOL! Third Thursday of each month; 3:30-5:30
Nita W. has volunteered to do another year of the MG/4-H After-School Program. Radha D. will be partnering with Nita to bring gardening life skills to these lucky kids. We may be in need of additional assistance or subs for this program. If you’re interested, please contact Nita to let her know your availability. The program runs October through July, with a garden plot exhibition at the JC Fair (early August). Master Gardeners program dates are the 3rd Thursday of each month, 3:30-5:30. You receive MG hours for after-school program time as well as any time prepping for each month’s activities.

Hi Everyone,
I had a great time last week at the 2014 Statewide MG convention working with people on diagnosing their plant and insect pest problems. I heard from quite a few Master Gardeners that they were in need of a general references for learning about plant diseases and insects and I thought it might be the same for readers of Pestsightings. Two recent textbooks written that I have found the quite readable and well-illustrated (target audience: introductory college survey type class) are:
Essential Plant Pathology, Second Edition by Gail L. Schumann and Cleora J D’Arcy, APS Press, 2010
Bugs Rule!: An Introduction to the World of Insects by Whitney Cranshaw and Richard Redak, Princeton University Press (September 15, 2013)
