The Jefferson County Master Gardener Foundation will present “From Straw to Table: Straw Bale Gardening Explained” by Master Gardener Julia Cordz on Thursday, March 14, at 3 p.m.

Julia became interested in straw bale gardening shortly after relocating to live full-time on her 11-acre forested property off Cape George Road in 2013. She wanted a vegetable garden, but was faced with several obstacles, the biggest being soil that was impenetrable hardpan.

Her presentation, entitled “From Straw to Table: Straw Bale Gardening Explained,” will attempt to demystify this method of gardening by demonstrating the essential preliminary steps to ensure success, share some tips she has learned from experience, and introduce you to how the straw bale gardening method is being used to solve food insecurity challenges globally.

Julia has been Master Gardener in Jefferson County since 2019. She has been a member of the Growing Groceries team since 2020; propagated many seeds for the plant sales; and participated in Plant Clinics both online during the pandemic and at the Jefferson County library.
