Growing in the Wind: Garden Microclimates Near the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
The 21st annual Secret Garden Tour features seven Port Townsend gardens, plus the orchard at Blue Heron School. Sponsored by the Jefferson County Master Gardener Foundation, the event takes place Saturday, June 17, 2017 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
This year’s tour showcases gardens in Port Townsend’s North Beach and Seaview neighborhoods. Gardens range in size from a third of an acre to six times that. Passions of the owners are evident: some gardens emphasize ornamental plants, others food production. Some showcase spectacular views, others inward-oriented refuges for plants and pets, and the humans who love them. All the gardens reveal in their details the strategies of plant lovers adapting to the cold marine air and hostile soils of Port Townsend’s northern edge. Walkability bonus: most of the gardens are within walking distance of each other.
