Welcome to the Demo Park
Across Washington State there are many different types of WSU Master Gardener Demonstration gardens at fairgrounds, county offices, libraries and schools. Few of them occupy a place with the prominence of the Port Townsend Demo Park, which greets travelers on the main city entrance on Sims Way.
This park represents a partnership between Port Townsend, Jefferson County Master Gardeners, and our university program. A formal agreement (2005), specifies that, “all work will be done by volunteers.” A dedicated team of MGs gather the second and fourth Wednesday of each month to focus on specific tasks and organic garden maintenance to give the city a colorful welcoming spot with year-round interest.
The garden offers volunteers a chance to study how to manage a maturing garden of small trees, mixed shrubs, perennials, bulbous plants, and pollinators, which have been selected for color, harmony and seasonal change. Volunteers also learn about irrigation, propagation, pruning and potting up seedlings for the annual plant sale.
The garden additionally provides people with ideas for improvement of home garden practices.
Friendship with other volunteers can grow out of working together shoveling or weeding. Visitors are welcome any time to stop and enjoy the pleasure of the garden’s beauty. For more information contact honey.niemann@gmail.com.
